Woven Under the African Night Sky: Contemporary Eswatini Baskets

There's something special about a handwoven African basket when you know the story behind it. Where it comes from, how it's made and the skill and patience woven into every detail.

At AAFRICAA, we love objects that bring together exceptional craftsmanship and contemporary African design. Our exclusive Cosmos collection of handwoven sisal baskets from Eswatini does exactly that.

Inspired by the colours and patterns of the African night sky, these decorative African baskets combine traditional weaving techniques with bold, contemporary design. The result is a collection of beautifully crafted pieces that feel equally at home displayed as African wall art or used as functional objects around the house.

The Art of Traditional Basket Weaving in Eswatini

Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, has a rich tradition of basket weaving, with skilled artisans transforming natural fibres into intricate, beautifully patterned objects.

The Cosmos collection is woven using sisal, a strong natural plant fibre that lends itself to finely detailed patterns and sculptural forms. What begins as a simple material becomes something extraordinary through the process of dyeing, shaping and weaving. Each basket is made by hand, carrying the skill, experience and individual touch of the person who created it.

It's a wonderful example of how traditional African craftsmanship continues to find new expression in contemporary homeware and design.

Slow, Intricate and Remarkably Precise

Creating a handwoven sisal basket is a slow and incredibly detailed process. The fibres are carefully dyed in rich colours before the weaving begins. Then, coil by coil, the basket gradually takes shape. Working in a spiral from the centre towards the outer edge, the weaver builds intricate patterns through the careful placement of each strand.

There's an almost mathematical precision to the process. Every change of colour, every curve and every repetition must be considered as the design develops.

The quality of a finely woven African basket can be seen in the tightness of the weave, the consistency of its shape and the detail of its patterns. It's craftsmanship that requires patience, concentration and an exceptional understanding of form.

Cosmos: African Wall Baskets Inspired by the Night Sky

For AAFRICAA, this collection began with a creative collaboration with the weaving studio in Eswatini. Working together, we developed exclusive colour combinations and motifs that combine traditional Eswatini basket-weaving techniques with AAFRICAA's contemporary approach to African design.

The inspiration was the African night sky, and so the collection became known as Cosmos. Deep, atmospheric shades of blue and black are contrasted with cream, pink and orange, creating striking patterns that evoke the colours, movement and wonder of the night sky. The geometric designs appear to radiate outwards from the centre of each basket, creating a wonderful sense of rhythm and movement.

The result is a collection of contemporary African baskets that honours the knowledge and craftsmanship behind traditional weaving while introducing a fresh and unexpected colour palette. It's this combination of heritage and innovation that makes African design so interesting to us.

Decorative African Baskets for Contemporary Interiors

One of the things we love most about the Cosmos collection is how easily these baskets become part of a living space. Displayed individually, each basket is a beautiful decorative object. Arranged together, they create striking African basket wall art, bringing colour, texture and pattern to an interior.

The combination of deep blues, blacks and warm accents makes the collection particularly effective against a neutral wall, while the intricate weaving adds a layer of texture that feels both natural and refined. But these baskets aren't only decorative. Their tightly woven construction and carefully considered shapes make them practical objects too, combining everyday usefulness with beautiful craftsmanship.

Whether you're drawn to African wall décor, handmade home accessories or collectible pieces of contemporary African craft, the Cosmos baskets offer something a little different.

Contemporary African Design Rooted in Craftsmanship

At AAFRICAA, we're always excited by collaborations that bring traditional skills into new creative conversations.

The Cosmos collection reflects exactly that. Through our collaboration with the Eswatini weaving studio, we've brought together time-honoured techniques, natural materials and contemporary colour and pattern. Every basket tells a story of patient craftsmanship, thoughtful design and the creativity that emerges when different ideas come together. From the natural sisal fibres to the rich colours and finely woven details, there's something to discover in every piece.

And perhaps that's what makes these African baskets particularly special. They're beautiful objects, but they're also a celebration of the people, skills and traditions behind them.
